What Has Gone Wrong for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United?

Joe Booth

Marcus Rashford’s rise from academy prodigy to Manchester United talisman promised to

be a tale of uninterrupted success. After an unforgettable debut in 2016, where he

announced himself with poise and clinical finishing, Rashford swiftly became a beacon of

hope and inspiration. Yet, recent seasons have seen his once-soaring career stall, prompting

significant questions about the reasons for his decline and his future.

Rashford’s decline has been most evident in the 2023/24 season. Despite enjoying a career-

best 30-goal haul in the previous campaign, his sharpness and reliability in front of goal have

diminished alarmingly. Once a potent attacking force, Rashford seems out of rhythm,

struggling to impose himself on matches and capitalizing on opportunities.

The problem is not just statistical it is visible. Rashford’s body language on the pitch often

betrays frustration and a sense of disengagement. Where once his instincts in front of the

goal were razor-sharp, his decision-making now seems tentative. Critics have pointed to

burnout, as years of intense physical and mental pressure catch up with him. Others suggest

Erik ten Hag’s tactical changes may have inadvertently nullified Rashford’s strengths,

particularly his explosive pace in transitions and his knack for exploiting space behind

defenders.

Rashford’s activism and philanthropy, especially his commendable work to combat child food

poverty, have earned him widespread admiration far beyond football. However, some argue

that such high-profile commitments may have inadvertently added to his already heavy

workload, detracting from his focus on football. While this explanation oversimplifies a

nuanced situation, it highlights the enormous scrutiny Rashford endures as both a role

model and football star.

Adding to the complexity are Manchester United’s wider struggles. Years of managerial

instability, poor recruitment decisions, and fluctuating team performance have created an

environment that would evaluate any player’s consistency, let alone someone bearing the

expectations of his club and country.

As a homegrown star, Rashford carries a unique burden. The United star has long been

seen as a symbol of the club’s identity and success. However, this pedestal comes with

significant pressure, particularly as fans increasingly demand talismanic performances from

one of their own. The weight of these expectations, compounded by relentless scrutiny on

social media, may have dented his confidence, creating a feedback loop of self-doubt and

underperformance.

In the final days of the transfer window, Rashford was offered the chance to play football

again by joining Premier League team Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season. He

hopes to rekindle his love for the game and get his career back on track. This is an

interesting move for the England star, and many people are optimistic that it will work out for

the forward.
