A previously uninspiring underpass in Bedford has been transformed into a vibrant space, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local artists, community volunteers, and young people from the area. The refurbished underpass, connecting the Embankment to Aspects Leisure Park, now features a stunning new mural, unveiled on Sunday, 13th April. The project was spearheaded by Bedford Creative Arts (BCA), a contemporary arts charity dedicated to creating art that reflects the lives and experiences of local communities.
The underpass, an important pedestrian link between the town centre and the Leisure Park, had been in need of attention for many years. It had suffered from poor lighting and frequent flooding. Bedford Borough Council recently carried out essential repairs, including the installation of improved lighting, and invited BCA to commission a mural to revitalise the space.
Bedford-based mural artist Sarah Harrison led the creative workshops, engaging young people supported by Bedfordshire Youth Offending Service to design the mural. The workshops explored themes of overcoming stigma, finding light in dark times, and using creativity as a tool for positivity. Inspired by these discussions, Sarah created a design focusing on light and hope.
Taking these ideas further, fellow Bedford artist Paige Denham transformed the concept into a colourful and uplifting mural that spans the walls, entrances, and ceiling of the underpass. The design, filled with vibrant patterns and shapes, symbolises resilience and creativity within the community.

Young volunteers from Castle Newnham School and the local neighbourhood worked alongside the Youth Offending Team, support artist Alison Goodyear, BCA staff, and Borough Ward Councillors to bring the mural to life. One youth participant shared, "I wasn't sure I would be any good at it, but I’ve really enjoyed it and am proud of the painting I’ve done." Matilda, one of the youngest contributors, said, "I really like all the colours and shapes."
The initiative has received praise from residents and leaders alike. Councillor Lucy Bywater, who helped secure ward funding for the project, remarked, "This cheerful design brightens the underpass and makes the experience of using it so much more pleasant. We hope it uplifts residents and deters graffiti for years to come." Valerie Bailey, a passer-by, commented, "It’s the first time I’ve passed it, and it looks amazing. Can you do the rest of the town?"
The project was funded by Bedford Borough Councillors Lucy Bywater, Paul Edmonds, and Hilde Hendrickx, with additional support from the Safer Bedfordshire Community Fund, managed by the Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation (BLCF). Councillor Sarah Gallagher summed up the effort: "This new mural is a wonderful example of how art can transform public spaces and unite communities. The collaboration between professional artists, local young people, and volunteers has resulted in a vibrant design that not only brightens the underpass but also symbolises hope and positivity."
With its repairs, improved lighting, and this remarkable artwork, the Bedford underpass now stands as a testament to the transformative power of art and teamwork.
